A special bar code called Bookland is used to represent ISBN numbers and pricing information on all books. Bookland uses the European Article Numbering system, EAN, which was introduced in 1978. A Bookland bar code encodes the ISBN number in EAN 13 format followed by a 5 digit supplemental code which is used to encode book price.

The 13 digit EAN code represents the book ISBN number. The 5 digit supplemental code shows the book price and the currency the price is shown in.
